Political Unrest

Political unrest is a broad term that encompasses various types of public protest and demonstration. It can be violent or non-violent, and it can be targeted towards specific people or groups of people. In the past, political unrest has been a driving force in many major transitions of societies.

When political unrest happens, it can have ripple effects that affect daily activities and access to basic services. Prolonged periods of unrest can also impact the security environment in a country and may prompt changes to travel warnings or advisories.

There are a number of causes for political unrest: economic disputes can be the spark, such as increased utility rates or rising food prices; political grievances can lead to protests and civil disobedience; and long-standing cultural animosities can resurface.

When you are in a country where there is significant political unrest, it’s important to stay informed. Read reliable news sources to keep up with current events, but be mindful of the source and avoid sensationalism that can fuel anxiety. Check the Harvard GSS risk ratings often, as prolonged civil unrest can cause a country to be placed in a travel advisory or alert, which can trigger additional pre-departure requirements for students. It’s also a good idea to have contingency plans for things like transportation, work/study spaces, and social services availability. Lastly, always carry identification when visiting places that are experiencing political unrest. Do not photograph or film protests and be sure to follow any curfews put in place.
